30 Day Song Challenge: Day 22

A song I listen to when I’m sad

Packing Blankets by The Eels. From the album Daisies of the Galaxy.

The Eels may be a band, but they are really a front for one dude. He goes by E (and sometimes Mark Oliver Everett). For as long as I remember this guy has been writing songs for the broken hearted. He just wants the girl so bad, but nothing ever goes his way. He has to keep telling himself its going to be ok. It doesn’t matter if its a lie, he plays the happy music while he sings his sad lyrics.

You know that analogy I mentioned before, how life is 10% what happens and 90% how we react? Well The Eels play out the darker side of that. Its not always easy to put on a happy face when you’re hurting. I’m always surprised by some peoples resilience; mother and father pleading for the return of their child on TV, the guy or girl who’s just been roughly dumped, the person who’s aspirations evaporate before their eyes. One thing The Eels do for me is remind me that while people may look like they have it all together, in reality that’s not always the case.

For me personally The Eels aren’t a band that snap my mood switch to happy what they seem to do is empathise – commiserate. It’s like they pat me on the back, say sometimes things suck and then tell a funny joke to cheer me up. I don’t mean this literally of course, but that’s the closes description I can muster.

By the way, if you think you recognise the band – chances are you heard them in the first Shrek movie with the song “My Beloved Monster”.

Anyway, get some Eels into ya ears. Its prolly good for your soul or something ;)
