A song i used to love but now hate
Lunacy Fringe by The Used. From the album In Love and Death.
Back in high school I loved this song because it was catchy, the music was good and I thought I was justified in being angry at the world. Now I’m not going to lie; the Used are emo, not just a bit emo, but the most emo. This song is the pinnacle of emo. To me its about a guy feeling sorry for himself, like most of the used’s music, but in this case he is using his misery to manipulate a girl/potential love interest.
At the time I was able to overlook the lyrics and the subtext behind them, but now its all I can hear. The kind of human interaction that the used portrays is simply twisted, it is unhealthy – the kind of thing that ruins peoples lives. I hate it when I see people manipulating love and using it as a weapon it is sickening.
Now I have nothing against music that is depressing, but music that is only depressing is not cool. The used are consistently miserable, self-indulging and write music that is emotionally manipulative. I don’t enjoy misery being put out there for miseries sake. It needs to be somehow insightful, either by it being confronting and realistic or by it showing some means of redemption. A good example of this is Bon Iver. He sings about things that have broken him, but his music follows his journey in rebuilding his life afterwards. Similarly The National produce music that is sad, but they do so in a manner that demonstrates the torture we put ourselves through – and this is confronting! When you consider what The Used sing about it is clear that they do neither, so I really don’t care much for them anymore.
