A song that is a guilty pleasure
Man Overboard by Blink-182. From the live album The Mark, Tom and Travis Show.
Blink-182… Ah the nostalgia. These guys were my first favourite band. If it weren’t for these guys I wouldn’t have learned to play guitar, wouldn’t have survived high school and probably wouldn’t be so into music.
It all started in grade 7 when A friend, Josh Crawford, gave me a mix CD of Blink-182 tracks. It was to be a turning point in my life – these guys played the perfect music – it was funny, rebellious, catchy and so energetic! I could listen to it to pick myself up whenever I felt tired or down.
The first song I learned to play on guitar was Adam’s Song; the first song that Josh, another friend and I were to play as a band. Our bands name was Critical Essence and we were three young music enthusiasts who only cared about loudness, fastness and wicked guitar riffs. From this my taste for music developed, it spread to other forms of rock, including heavy, fusion and alternative which evolved even further to include blues, soft-rock and some pop. For the first time I felt like listening to music in my spare time, and for most of grade 7 80% of my listening was done to Blink. THis has developed to the point where my taste in music is radically eclectic.
Anyway, these guys are a guilty pleasure for me because as many would expect – it is music that many would grow out of. I never did. I still love listening to Blink. That energy I lovedĀ is still there now coupled with memories of the only aspect of my high school life that I only have happy memories of: music. One of my close friends Elly once said “you’ll grow out of it one day”, well I’m sorry to tell you Elly but I still love them. While my admiration for other bands has toppled before the oncoming of my ‘maturity’, the nostalgia I have for Blink has left it safe and ‘sound’ in the prize possessions I have of my younger days. So while others may have grown out of Blink – I still remain a loyal listener (even when they had that weird emo patch).
