30 Day Song Challenge: Day 10

A song that makes me fall asleep

The Past and Pending by The Shins. From the album Oh, Inverted World.

As this song plays I am always caught by a sense of calm contemplation, it feels warm, like laying on the grass in the autumn sun as I soak up the last dregs of warmth the seasonal year has to offer.

I regularly find this kind of imagery in songs, it might have something to do with my being a visually stimulated person. Anyway, in this case the warm autumn afternoon signals the end to something beautiful, I thinks that’s also what is happening in the song. It seems to me to be about a young man coming to the end of what has been a happy relationship and enjoying the nostalgia of the happy times he had while it was afoot.

Nostalgia, like autumn sun, are things that make me want to sleep. Being in that frame of mind feels so safe and warm. The feeling is further emphasised by the soft rhythm and melody of the song. As I hear the guitar strums begin, I always find myself calming down and relaxing almost to the point where I could sleep. I don’t think I’ve ever actually fallen asleep to this song, but I guarantee that it is the song I am most likely to do so to.
